In Memory of Shota Kotake
Share

It's been a week since I discovered about the devastating and untimely loss of one of Ireland's finest contemporary artists.
Shota Kotake of Niigata, Japan had made Ireland his home for over a decade. And it was Father Ted that galvanised his adoration for Irish humour and culture. With his exceptional talent in many mediums and various illustrative styles, he won the hearts of the Irish public with projects such as his 'Ted-A-Day' portraits and Dublin Canvas works, bringing new life and colour to the streets of Dublin.
I was very lucky to have met him once in person at what would be the final Nom-Con back in 2015. After having a great chat, we exchanged art. I would trade him an A3 print of my 'do the mayro' illustration, and in turn he drew me in his famous manga-style caricature.

Shota would even go on to do an in-depth analysis of my piece, written in his trademark, humourous style. It's still available to read through his art Facebook page if you'd like to have a look. I'm still so honoured and delighted to this day to read his interpretation of this piece.
Shota was cremated on 18th February 2025. A highly successful GoFundMe campaign helped raise over €20,000 to help his family from Japan to come to Ireland to bring home his ashes. The one thing I regret is not having another chance to meet him and have the craic.
Thank you Shota for all your wonderful and awe-inspiring work throughout the years, and truly capturing what it means to be Irish. You're gone far too soon, and the art landscape of this island will never be the same. Rest in peace, bud.
